4 Tips for Better Safety Communication in Construction

19 March 2020

Government data show that an estimated 2.3 million working days were lost in the Construction sector due to work-related illness and injury during 2016/17. Improving communication is a major factor in accident and illness prevention.

With a well thought out communication strategy, construction companies are able to reduce accidents, improve employee well-being and decrease costs associated with illness and injury.

Improve Staff inductions

Inductions are a key way of introducing new team members to important health and safety information. By making inductions engaging and memorable, employees are more likely to become compliant.;

Keeping Safety Signs Clean and Readable

Old and worn out safety signs will lose their impact as well as communicate to employees and the public that health and safety isn’t a top priority. Always ensure you invest in high quality safety signs and replace them when they become worn or dated.

Display Key information strategically

The Management of health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require every employer to provide employees with information on potential risks, what protective measures are in place, all emergency procedures and contact information for those with key roles in Health and Safety management.

Think carefully about where to display Health and Safety information. Site entrance boards are a good way to display key information (legal requirements, safety contact details etc). Any hazard specific signs should be placed in a visible location close to the appropriate hazard, and any generic signs should be visibly placed in a communal space.

Engage Your Workforce

The majority of team members are more likely to be compliant to Health and Safety if employers keep them involved in the process. Communication is key to keeping team members on board: safety updates and emails are effective tools, as well as providing the opportunity for workers to express their opinions.
