In-house technical team at VJT develops innovative solutions for fixings

V.J.Technology, one of the UK's leading distributors and manufacturers of fixings products, has announced two innovative products developed by their in-house technical department. One is a temporary bolt for fixing to concrete any items that later have to be removed. The second is a fast setting resin for use in the colder, winter months.

The Tunnel Bolt (14 x 120 M16) has been used extensively by the Channel Tunnel Rail Link for fixing conveyor belts and spoil pipes for the removal of millions of tons of waste material from tunnels. Manufactured for V.J.Technology in Germany, the tunnel bolt is Zinc Plated 10.9 Grade Steel, has a unique pattern of serrations on the concrete cutting threads and a hexagonal drive head.

The bolt consists of a unique concrete cutting edge which produces a helical thread within the concrete and a projecting M16 metric thread. This allows the nut to generate high clamping forces within the fixing.

Live Ultimate Tensile Pull-out Tests were carried out on the Tunnel Bolt using actual concrete tunnel segments. The concrete failed at 65kN. The tests, which were monitored by Rail Link Engineering and its many contractors, were carried out by the Technical Department at VJT.

The winter resin, the V.J.Technology EC - 'Express Cure' - gives construction companies and their sub-contractors considerable time-saving benefits. Instead of having to wait for traditional, summer resins to set when temperatures are low, the VJT Express Cure resins set much faster, allowing the next phase of works to be carried out much sooner and eliminating down time.

The formula was developed as a direct result of VJT recognising that the delay was costing construction companies and their sub-contractors in lost time. With deadlines increasingly under pressure, the time saving created by the VJT Express Cure resin is a real bonus for construction companies. It remains unique in the UK sector.

This technical service is available to customers of VJT and includes on-site and in-house testing in the test facility at VJT's premises. All anchor tests are carried out to CFA guidelines.
